1 Assistant Professor, Govt Medical College, Palakkad 2 Associate Professor Govt Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram Abstract Background: Over the past three decades, outpatient surgery has grown at an exponential rate. Various surgical conditions have been diagnosed and treated using laparoscopy on a day care basis. Aim: To study the induction characteristics like average time for induction of anaesthesia, hemodynamic effects like changes in heart rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, presence or absence of apnoea, involuntary movements and pain on injection,. to study recovery characteristics, incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting. Materials and Methods: A randomized controlled double blind study involving 60 patients aged 20 to 40 years ASA PS 1 undergoing daycare laparoscopic surgery lasting less than 45 minutes. Group A received propofol 2.5mg/kg bodyweight and group B received thiopentone sodium 5mg/kg body weight. Result: Our study revealed propofol to be superior to Thiopentone sodium for daycare surgery as induction agent.

Randomized comparison of outcome after propofol-nitrous oxide or enflurane-nitrous oxide anaesthesia in operations of long duration.
A randomized, prospective, comparative study was performed to evaluate induction characteristics, haemodynamic changes and recovery in 60 ASA I-II patients undergoing mainly gynaecological laparotomies with either propofol or thiopentone-enflurane anaesthesia. The propofol group (n = 30) received 2 mg.kg-1 propofol for induction of anaesthesia followed by propofol infusion. The thiopentone-enfl...
متن کاملComparison of thiopentone sodium and propofol for electro convulsive therapy (ECT).
OBJECTIVE For safe conduct of electro convulsive therapy (ECT), general anaesthesia is administered to the patients. In this study we compared thiopentone sodium and propofol as induction agents for ECT. PATIENTS AND METHODS Twenty five patients each undergoing at least 2 sessions of ECT at the psychiatry department were included in the study. Each patient either received thiopentone or propo...
متن کاملMidazolam Co-induction with Thiopentone and Propofol : a Comparative Study
Most commonly we use thiopentone and propofol as I.V.induction agent for General anaesthesia. They have many characteristics similar to ideal induction agent but also have dose related side effects. To decrease these side effects we may use the small dose of drug before induction which act synergistically with thiopentone and propofol in central nervous system to produce induction and the durg ...
متن کاملComparison of the haemodynamic effects and seizure activity during modified ECT with thiopentone and propofol used as inducing agents
––Electroconvulsive therapy is also known as Electroshock or Shock therapy or Electroplex. Seizure activity produced by ECT is considered as the therapeutic aspect of this form of treatment, but is accompanied by untoward physiologic consequences, mainly cardiovascular and cerebral in nature. The hemodynamic effects can have a significant impact in patients with underlying cardiovascular diseas...
متن کاملMidazolam and Thiopentone as Co-induction
This study was undertaken to compare the induction characteristics of conventional thiopentone sodium, midazolam, and a combination of midazolam and thiopentone sodium as co-induction agent. Total one hundred and fifty patients of ASA grade I and II were divided into three groups in a double blind randomized study. Group-I received midazolam 0.25 mgkg-1 intravenously, group–II received thiopent...
